How to Get Merit Scholarships at U of Michigan on Reddit

How much does UToledo cost?

We know college is a big investment. But we believe a University of Toledo education is worth it.

You should know this before taking a look at the cost:

Most new students don't pay full price. 80% of new UToledo students receive scholarships and other state and federal aid.

We believe in transparency. A student's cost to attend UToledo varies by college, program and a host of other options. This is the average amount full-time students pay per year.

Can I lower the cost?

Absolutely.

Most first-time freshmen are automatically considered for merit scholarships based on their GPAs when they apply to UToledo. No other application necessary! If you qualify, you get the scholarship.

And many out-of-state students are able to bring down their tuition costs to about the same amount as in-state students with an $8,000 Rocket Nation scholarship. The Rocket Nation scholarship is also based on GPA and automatically awarded when you apply and if you qualify.

Are there other types of financial aid?

Yep. If you file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and can demonstrate financial need, you may qualify for need-based aid such as loans, grants and work study. Incoming UToledo freshmen were awarded more than $7 million in need-based aid in 2021-22.

We award scholarships based on all kinds of things — good grades or whether you're majoring in astronomy or are involved in high school extracurriculars. You don't have to repay scholarships.

A loan is money you borrow and pay back with interest. Generally, federal government loans are lower interest and have more benefits than loans from banks or other sources. Always — and we can't stress this enough — do your homework. Know the terms and conditions and who is making the loan.

Grants are usually need-based. No repayment required. They can come from the federal or state government, UToledo or a private organization.

You may qualify for a federal work-study job based on your financial need. Many of our campus employers hire work-study students. You also may find other jobs on or off campus to help pay tuition.

Rarely do students pay the full cost of attendance at UToledo. The majority of our students receive some sort of financial aid.

Financial aid packages depend on many variables. The most important are your family income and high school academic performance.

Check out our family profiles to see how those variables affect aid packages and how financial aid can stack up to reduce overall cost. We also show how a student's remaining annual cost can be spread over eight months with our monthly Rocket Payment Plan.

How Will My Investment in UToledo Pay Off?

Meet Sean Dunphy, starship build engineer for SpaceX

Class of 2020, Mechanical Engineering

"I have dreamed of working on space exploration and at Disney World since I was a kid. I had the opportunity to do both thanks to the College of Engineering's mandatory co-op program. I worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on three technology development projects, creating prototypes for new space hardware. I worked at Disney as an attractions cast member at Flight of Passage and as a design and engineering co-op."

Read more about how Dunphy's UToledo experiences helped him secure his job at SpaceX.

Meet Margaret Gorz, associate scientist for the Estée Lauder Companies

Class of 2018, Cosmetic Science and Formulation

"My job at Estée Lauder is basically my dream job. I didn't think I could end up there so quickly. But our program really gives us a competitive advantage that makes us stand out. The program helped me pursue my dreams."

Gorz started working at Estee Lauder three months after graduation. Read more about how she went from UToledo to the giant cosmetics company.

Meet Emir Moore, UToledo M.B.A. student

Class of 2020, Business Management and Marketing

"At first, some people told me I was crazy and it wasn't feasible to move to Washington, D.C., at the beginning of my senior year for the Congressional internship while taking classes as a full-time student. I'm happy I listened to myself. [UToledo's] Multicultural Emerging Scholars program gave me the head start, network and support to be successful."

Moore was one of 25 African-American students in the U.S. ― the first from UToledo — selected for a Congressional Black Caucus internship. Read more about Moore's experiences at UToledo.
